What are the side effects of Propalin and Stilbestrol for dogs?

Original Question: Tala has been having a urine leakage. We have been told this is hormonal incontinence due to a lack of sufficient estrogen. Tests have been run to rule out other causes. Either of two medications has been recommended: Propalin or Stilbesterol. Which medication do you recommend to your clients? How do I decide between the two? - Christine

Hi Christine,

Thanks for your question.

Both of these medications are generally considered safe to give although as with all medications, there is the potential for side effects but in my experience these are very rare.

What are the side effects of Propalin for dogs?

So Propalin can cause restlessness, it can cause aggression, irritability, and even high blood pressure.

What are the side effects of Stilbestrol for dogs?

Stilbestrol has the potential to be toxic to the bone marrow.

Unfortunately my license prohibits me from recommending medications without having a client-patient relationship however I encourage you to speak with your veterinarian about which one might be best for your dog.

Good luck.
