My dog bites her left paw and shakes when she stands sometimes. What is the cause and treatment?

Original Question: Minttu regularly "bites" her left paw, below "knee". The leg also shakes sometimes when she stands. She has had this problem since she was a puppy, but now I am thinking, could it be more serious and if there is anything I should do. I have previously mentioned it to the vet, but she has not suggested anything concrete. - Johanna

Hi Johanna,

There could be a few different medical issues or we could be looking at something behavioural. Often times, chewing at part of a limb may indicate some focus of pain. The shaking may also be tied to that. A neurological problem could be part of the problem as well. If it’s more behavioural, then it can be more difficult to diagnose. If you haven’t already, talk to your vet about some imaging (X-rays) or you could always seek the opinion of a veterinary specialist.

All the best,

Dr. Ryan Llera
