How many shots do puppies need?

Original Question: How many shots will my puppy need? - Jessica

How many shots do puppies need? Dec 22, 2018

Hi Jessica,

Congrats on the new puppy! How many vaccines your puppy will need depends on at what age they are starting their vaccine series and their lifestyle.  All dogs should have the core vaccines of Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, and Rabies.  This will encompass a minimal 3 separate vaccines, possibly 4.  There are non-core vaccines as well – Lyme, Leptospirosis, and Bordetella – which are optional again depending on lifestyle and what activities your dog may participate in.  Most of those will need a series of 2 vaccines as well.  These are all given in the first few months and annual or tri-annual boosters will be needed depending on which type of vaccine was used.  Your veterinarian can help guide you in terms of what will be appropriate for your puppy.

I hope this helps.
