Could dry food be causing my cat’s diarrhea?
Original Question: My cat has diarrhea every time she eats dry food. I try to feed her slowly each day and give her small amounts but after a while she gets diarrhea and we have to start from zero again. - Mai
Hi Mai,
Thanks for your question. Diarrhea is a very common and unpleasant problem experienced by many pet owners, I encourage you to take a look at our video ‘What to Do Before the Vet if Your Dog or Cat is Vomiting or Has Diarrhea’ for more strategy suggestions. There are many possible underlying factors and it can be tricky to determine the exact cause. Possibilities may include infections like parasites, viruses, bacteria, mal-absorptive disorders such as a problem with the pancreas, food intolerance or sensitivity, inflammatory bowel disease and some types of cancer. In your case, I would suggest consulting with your vet and rule out infections and other diseases before trying another diet change. There are many diets your vet can review with you that are specifically designed to help with digestive sensitivities – but ensuring there is nothing more worrisome going on is a good idea.
I hope this is helpful!
