How do I remove my dog’s tear stains without the use of antibiotics?

Original Question: Our 8.5-year-old English Bulldog has recently again developed red stains under both eyes. It seems that bodily fluids are causing a reddish stain also on his leg etc. We have taken him to 2 visits to the vet and they are not too concerned as he is in good health. When he was younger an antibiotic cleared it up. Can we clear this up somehow without the use of antibiotics? - Dimas

Hi Dimas,

Thanks for your question. Tear staining is a common occurrence with many brachycephalic (short faced breeds) and fortunately it is a cosmetic problem typically not indicative of another problem. Reddish staining elsewhere on his body is often seen with saliva staining and may be indicative of allergies. If there are no signs of allergies, the best you can do is to keep these areas clean. There are some supplements out there but none are heavily reliable and antibiotics are not something I recommend due to potential side effects or creating resistance for bacteria to create other problems. For more information, I recommend you check out our video, ‘How do you get rid of a dog’s tear stains?’

Please consult with your veterinarian before trying any new products.

All the best,
