What is causing a lump and rash above my cat’s eyes and what next steps should I take?
Original Question: My cat suddenly developed lumps above his left eye and a rash above his right eye and this happened almost overnight. He was on antibiotics for a week and steroids for 2 weeks with only a noticeable improvement. He also has some hair loss above his eyes. He is eating well, a bit lethargic but the lumps are not a bother to him. His diet now is for sensitive skin (HILLS) and his behaviour is normal for a 4-year-old cat in my opinion. He has been to the vet twice with no conclusive diagnosis, what can I do next? The vet suspected a food allergy as these lumps showed up overnight after my cat had some grilled chicken (Fancy Feast cat food), what do I do now? Thanks - Bob
Hi Bob,
I’m wondering if your vet did any needle aspirations or other tests on the lumps or skin scraping with the hair loss. Allergies are one possibility but also problems like infections or parasites could be considered. You could ask for a referral to a specialist for a second opinion. If we’re looking at food allergies, it can take a full 8-12 weeks before any benefit is fully noted so don’t get too alarmed if your cat is comfortable and acting normally but continue to follow up with your veterinarian.
All the best,
Dr. Ryan Llera
