Why is my dog backing up and sitting down?

A black Labrador Retriever puppy attempting to sit down on a rock outside

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your question.

The symptoms you describe are quite general and could apply to any number of conditions. This issue you describe of him shaking, walking backwards and sitting down is quite general as well. This is truly a case where a physical examination, a more thorough history of the issue is detailed and wellness blood work is performed is the only course of action I can really suggest. I can however give you a few thoughts to consider.

This behaviour of backing up and sitting down could be related to some joint soreness or pain. It could be indicative of arthritis developing in the joints. Trembling or shaking can indicate weakness and discomfort as well. I couldn’t even speculate if this is what is occurring or where it could be originating from and wouldn’t want to guide you in the wrong direction. As much as I try to help people through this medium, without thorough information, I can’t recommend specific strategies. I also run the risk of giving you inappropriate advice that could be easily changed within minutes of a physical examination with a veterinarian. For this reason, I have little choice but to direct you to your regular veterinarian to evaluate this issue further.

Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Good luck.
