Is there insulin and syringes that are preferred for diabetic cats and where can I purchase diabetic pet food?

Hi Catharine,

Thanks for sending in your question.

Diabetes is, unfortunately, a very common condition in cats but it is also very treatable. There are many pet food manufacturers that make diabetic foods for cats – these are typically low in simple carbohydrates, and higher in protein, with some variation among the brands. These diets are only available for purchase through your veterinarian – the reason being is that they are meant to be used under veterinary supervision. These diets have a lot of scientific research behind them and are the first step in diabetes management in the cat. Although insulin and insulin syringes are available at human pharmacies, obtaining these products from your veterinarian, at least initially, is ideal. The type of insulin, type of needles and administration, monitoring, and goals of insulin therapy are very different in cats and dogs than in humans. A miscalculation or error in the administration of insulin can have life-threatening effects. Therefore, it is important to work with your veterinarian and follow their recommendations when using insulin products and managing diabetes. I realize this is may not be the answer you were looking for, but I hope it gives you some insight.

Best of luck!
