I think my dog had a seizure. What should my next steps be?

A dog had a seizure and is now laying in their dog bed

Hi Vishwa,

Thanks for your question. Sorry to hear that you’re dealing with this.

The first thing I would like to point out is that I have had clients previously that thought a seizure occurred but it actually wasn’t. I’m not sure what you witnessed but I would recommend that you describe it in greater detail with your veterinarian and let them get a sense for whether it may have truly been a seizure or not.

Regardless of whether it was or wasn’t a seizure, I would recommend performing some routine diagnostics to evaluate for any conditions that might have caused or contributed to the symptoms you witnessed.

I could write out an answer to your question, but everything I would cover is outlined in this article, “Epilepsy and Seizures in Cats and Dogs: 8 Things You Need to Know.”

I recommend you read it and then visit your veterinarian to carry on the discussion further.

Thanks and good luck.
