Does my pet have to see a vet for vomiting and diarrhea or is there something I can give to help firm up their stool?

Hi Marianne,

Thanks for your question.

Vomiting and diarrhea are common signs of a wide variety of illnesses. Some of these are temporary and not life-threatening, such as an upset stomach from eating new foods, while other causes need to be assessed and treated without delay. Our pets cannot tell us how they are feeling and so it is always a good idea to have your pet seen by a veterinarian when they show signs of illness. A thorough physical exam, coupled with some basic diagnostics tests (if necessary) can help to determine how serious the illness might be. I would not suggest attempting to treat this issue at home without consulting your vet. Remember to give your vet a thorough history (including changes to the diet and any changes in routine or travel) and try to bring along a fecal sample if possible (always useful when there is diarrhea!).

I hope this gives you some direction.
