What are some alternatives to Phenobarbital that have fewer side effects to help with my dog’s seizures? Should we try the new NeuroCare diet from Purina?

Hi Lila,

Sorry to hear about the changes with your older pup. The new NeuroCare diet from Purina may help with seizure activity in some dogs but my understanding is that it’s better used in conjunction with a medication. An alternative to Phenobarbital is a drug called Zonisamide which is becoming largely preferred as a first choice for anti-epileptic medication as the side effect profile is much less than on Phenobarbital. Definitely talk to your veterinarian about some alternatives.

I would encourage you to take a look at our article ‘Epilepsy and Seizures In Pets: What You Should Know’ for more tips and suggestions.

All the best,
