How to Store Dog Food and Treats:

  • Practice first-in, first-out: use up older food first.
  • Store dry food in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
  • Keep frozen food in the freezer until use.
  • Bulging cans of wet dog food should be discarded.

When Feeding:

  • Either wet or dry food is fine. Consider a dental cleaning dry food if your dog has gingivitis or soft foods for older dogs that have difficulty chewing.
  • Measure food to avoid overfeeding. Portion according to this chart from the WSAVA by clicking here.
  • How long can you leave wet dog food out? What about raw food? Throw away moist, wet or raw food after (2) hours if not eaten.
  • Stainless steel dishes are best because they resist bacterial growth.
  • Wash your hands with warm soapy water after handling dog food.
  • Regularly wash and sanitize food dishes.
